Iran-E Man
During the fall of 2022 I was reached out to by fashion brand Pairi Daeza to participate in a fundraising project for the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center. I was asked to create a scarf design inspired by the Woman, Life, Freedom protests happening in Iran after the death of Jina Amini with eleven other artists. The scarves were then used in the award winning short film Iran-E Man directed by Naghmeh Pour. They were also showcased in galleries, Fashion Week 2023, and carried in select stores.
The Scarf
This design is inspired by the Persian word "Shir Zan" which means courageous woman (lit. lion woman). I believe this is a fitting representation of the brave women fighting for their fundamental rights currently in Iran.
The lion woman in my design is breaking the chains that once weighed her down while brandishing a sword, showing her will to fight. The fires around her are representative of the bonfires women would throw their mandatory hijabs into and dance around. Bordering her are various icons that represent the 2022 protests. The scissors are for the people who have cut their hair as a symbol of mourning. The fist, combat boot, and Molotov cocktail are for resistance against the Iranian regime. The paper doll chain on the bottom shows unity between the different types of people in Iran. Through these motifs, I aimed to highlight the resistance and unity of all Iranians who are fighting for a brighter future.
